1. What wildlife can I expect to see on my art safari?

All of our painting holidays are located within exclusive private game lodges, located within and close to reserves that are home to the 'Big Five' (Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo) as well as other wildlife endemic to Southern Africa.

The locations are also home to hundresd of species of birds, and the perfect location for anyone with an interest in the drawing and painting of wild birds.

2. What does the price of the safari include?

All our safaris include:

  • All transfers to the lodge from Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport,and return transfers
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) throughout your stay
  • All daily game walks and drives
  • All other activities and excursions detailed in the itinerary
Unfortunately, flights to South Africa and flights/travel to Hoedspruit are not included. Although we are unable to offer flights we will be happy to help you find the best flight and offer any advice.

3. How much spending money will I need?

You will need to bring enough money for drinks at the hotel and lodges, any tips, to purchase souvenirs and for other personal items. Remember that due to the favourable exchange rate of the British Pound and US Dollar, your money will go further than at home. For most guests £10 - £20 per day will be sufficient.

4. What will I need to bring with me?

Your sketchbooks, pencils, small watercolour set and your preferred watercolour papers.
A broad brimmed sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellent
Binoculars, camera and a small torch are also highly recommended.
You are advised to bring neutral coloured lightweight clothing (muted colours such as khaki, beige or olive green ensure as little disturbance to wildlife as possible whilst on game drives and walks), good pair of walking shoes or boots, waterproof jacket, and a sweater or fleece for early morning and evening game viewing.

5. Will I need to bring painting supports, stools etc?

No. We will supply all drawing boards, easels and sketching stools. We also always keep a limited stock of a range od watercolour and drawing paper, watercolour and acrylic paints and pencils etc, to cover in an emergency.

6. Are non-painting partners welcome?

Yes, non-painting partners are very welcome and well catered for. They will be able to make the most of game walks and drives under the expert guidance of qualified and highly experienced game guides as well as time to relax and enjoy the facilities of the lodge. Separate excursions to local towns and nearby attractions can also be arranged.

7. Will I need travel insurance?

Yes, you will need a comprehensive travel insurance to cover your holiday. It is essential that you have full medical, emergency evacuation and repatriation cover for the period of your holiday.

8. I've only started drawing and painting. Will I be able to enjoy the safari holiday?

Bush Art Safaris caters for all levels of artists and both the group interaction and individual attention will be of huge benefit to all who attend. Groups are small and friendly. Above all, we aim to provide you with an unique safari experience where you will have the opportunity to experience the wildlife of Africa up close. Above all we'll help you to record your experience through your art.

9. What will the accommodation be like?

All the lodges we use provide high quality en-suite accommodation. Rooms are either twin or double rooms and are equipped with overhead fans and insect screens.

The lodges have swimming pools and undercover terraces and 'Bomas' to take in the scenery whilst enjoying a night cap.

10. Do you cater for particular dietary requirements?

Yes, we cater for all dietary requirements. All we ask is that you please let us know at the time of booking.

11. Will I need to take any medication against malaria?

The lodge we use is situtated in an area of the Limpopo Province designated as a low-risk Malaria area. As such you should consult your local GP or medical practitioner for advice about the most suitable anti-Malaria medication for you.

Besides taking any medication, it is best to avoid being bitten at all. Tips to avoid being bitten by the anopheles mosquito include:

  • from twilight, apply a mosquito repellent to exposed body areas
  • wear long trousers as well as socks to cover the ankles and covered shoes
  • at night, close all fly screens on your doors and windows

12. Will I need a Visa to travel to South Africa?

Holders of passports from Australia, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland including the British Islands Bailiwick of Guernsey and Jersey, Isle of Man and Virgin Islands, the Republic of Ireland as well as British Overseas Territories do not require a Visa to travel to South Africa.

Holders of passports from other nationalities should check their Visa requirements at the South African Tourist Information website.
